In order to communicate effectively in organizations, the people are required to have skills. The United States has a big diversity, so everyone has different way to communicate and listen with others. The first thing in the strategies for effective communication and negotiation is listening. A good listener could be a good speaker because we need understand the argument well before we can make our points and argument. We must also be introspective since it is a good way to negotiate and bargain with the partner. Asking questions is also a way to understand the situation well. We need to be open minded and control our emotions as well.
For new workers, they should find a mentor. Mentor has more experiences, so they can teach us their experiences and strategies. There are three stages in the learning process: intiation, cultivation, separation. During the first stage, the mentor and the learner will learn about one another. In cultivation, they will begin to learn and teach. The bond between the two should be greater during this stage. The last stage is like a completion where the protege will be on his/her own.
There are communication over the phones, via emails, on social networking, ect. These are also should be practiced with the communicating strategies.
I think the chapter is helpful in demonstrating the strategies for effective communication. We need communication everyday in our lives. Therefore, it is extremely important to learn the skills and strategies.
